First government formed 1948 with the support of smaller far-right parties soon absorbed into Fine Gael (Monetary Reform Party, National Corporatist Party, Coras na Poblach, Ailtiri na hAiseirghe, etc).

Once in power, Fine Gael began the process of bringing Ireland more into line with the rest of Europe. Relations with Great Britain remained very strained.
